last night my brother and i sat out on the porch and drank a beer and smoked some cigarettes and had a perfect conversation. the topics included: -artificial intelligence -cloning and it's societal and (if this is not redundant) moral implications -the origin of human rights and whether they are innate or earned, as related to the above topic -the seat of personhood -how well his date kissed -what she wore -steve myerchin, high school guidance counselor to end all high school guidance counselors -my friend kerri, who died 7 years ago -why wheat beer is so damn tasty -a friend of ours did cocaine and i didn't know it -how people at work have no idea who i am and why this is probably a good thing -why an internal monologue is essential -why people need to believe in god, the soul and the unattainable nature of the definition of emotions -why, ultimately, even if everything that we chalk up to being immaterial or divine is a function of biology, it doesn't matter, because the real meat of all this is experiential -we think so similarly it's beautiful -what makes this even more beautiful is we can still have a good intellectual knock-down-drag-out because jon loves to play the devil's advocate -how much fun it was to explain the term "devil's advocate" to his native japanese date -stuart, and how his strategy to take over the neighborhood is highly effective -princess kitty willie's problem with stuart -why isn't that car moved yet? -what it feels like to know the sky has already fallen, and more than that, why it feels so good to feel that as a memory now rather than an event which you are experiencing currently -what we were going to eat for breakfast today at the diner -frank -the radiohead show -being a server at a restaurant -what we are doing when he gets home tonight -"hey, it's like 4 am, huh?" -"ok, girl, i'm gonna go up the street and house-sit" -"ok, sweet, sleep well, wake me up by noon" -"i love you jess" -"i love you too, jon" -"gimme a kiss goodnight" -kiss -kiss -"be safe!" close the door, turn the lock, leave on the light and wander into bed |
